This show was inspired by the city of Antwerp and its medieval history, featuring figures with disturbing injuries and dim, nocturnal landscapes hinting at mass purging, witch hunts, and historical plagues. Medieval society tried hard to find scapegoats to blame for pandemics and natural disasters. Those often included so-called “witches,” Jews, or other minorities. Driven by fear, people would seek "signs" from above that would serve as warnings, leading to penance and extreme measures such as pogroms or burning people at the stake. Exploring medieval history and beliefs made me realize how human nature does not change.
